Course Description: The 1 mile 4 furlong course is horseshoe shaped & run left handed. The course is sharp & has some undulations. The final bend into the home straight is very tight called Tattenham Corner.

Facilities:

The Queens Stand: This impressive stand gives superb views of the racecourse. The facilities are excellent with the Blue Riband Restaurant & also a variety of bars & catering outlets.

The Club Enclosure: After much visitor feedback it was decided to incorporate this enclosure into the Grandstand enclosure.

The Grandstand Enclosure: In this enclosure you have access the grandstand terracing with its excellent views of racing & the downs, parade ring & winners enclosure. There are a variety of bars & catering outlets selling hot food & snacks.

The Derby: The Derby has been run for over 224 years, but it is a testament to it's popularity that even today, crowds in their thousands flock to the Epsom Downs on the first Saturday in June to witness history being made. So what makes it so special? It's down to the uniqueness of the day. Derby Day truly is "Britain's Biggest Day Out". The tight turn at Tattenham Corner has caught out many a great horse & this coupled with the festival atmosphere, great quality racing & the world's fastest five furlong sprint track make up for a great race meeting.
Epsom is very well known as being the most (or one of the most) undulating courses in Britain. It's often described as a rollercoaster by a lot of people in racing. The Derby course starts way out amongst the trees, at the lowest point of the course. It then steadily goes uphill, turning left towards it's highest point. Then a fairly sharp turn left & an incredible downhill spurt round the corner onto the main straight. Any horses that aren't well balanced, or positioned going round the bend, will have little chance of winning. Many fancied horses have come here & failed to handle the course totally.

The main problem in picking the Derby winner is that none (or very few) of them will have raced here before & therefore clues about handling a course like this are very few & far between. Avoid any horses that have struggled previously with undulations!
